Director, CIIMS
Central India Institute of Medical Sciences (CIIMS), Nagpur, a registered society (Maharashtra/215/83) and a Public Charitable Trust (F-3592) a dream of Dr. G.M. Taori, the founder Director, came true in July 1984. It is a medical research institute with a medical services wing (hospital) as part of infrastructure for research. Until the year 1999, our research was focused on mainly clinical research projects along with the hospital services, but after we actively focused on other areas of research related to basic life sciences and since then we have engrossed ourselves in exploration in basic life sciences research center.
It was started in 2000 under the leadership of a legendary neurologist. Dr. G.M. Taori & Microbiologist Professor H. F. Daginawala for conducting translation research on human illness. Recently the Institute has constructed a dedicated building for research in the name “CIIMS-Advanced Research Centre” (CIIMS-ARC). CIIMS ARC was inaugurated on 29th June 2023.
Scientists at CIIMS-ARC have been working on bedside problems faced by clinicians to provide them with appropriate & cost effective solutions concerning topics for the management of patients. The best routine of the institute is Scientists and Clinicians are working very closely with each other and sharing the bedside issues and data to the scientist and on the same hand scientists are updating about technologies established in the research lab which can be used for bedside research and save patients’ lives.
Institute has been developed on generous donations from the public not only from local regions but also from distant areas. Our Institute is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) for carrying out R & D activity. The Human Ethical Committee (HEC) of the institute is registered with ICMR DHR. Institute also has a registered institutional biosafety committee, and NGO portal registration. CIIMS Advanced Research Centre (CIIMS-ARC) is a dedicated four floor building wing and part of the hospital and connected very well with patients, data, and clinical samples. CIIMS-ARC has well equipped molecular, immunological and animal cell culture. Established NGS facility recently, under grant challenge project received from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to undertake mNGS studies.
The contributions of CIIMS-ARC scientists have gained National and International recognition of through publications in renowned scientific journals, Patents, Awards, and funding from national and international funding agencies, like Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department Of Science & Technology (DST), Welcome to Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) USA, University of Nottingham (UoN) UK.
