Epidemiological Characterization of Zoonotic Infections in Melghat Tribal Population
ICMR Zoonotic project launch event (1 st March 2025):
The ICMR Melghat Project Launch, held on 1st March 2025 in Nagpur, marked the commencement of a pivotal initiative titled “Epidemiological Characterization of Zoonotic Infections in Melghat Tribal Population”. A collaboration between CIIMS-ARC and MAHAN Trust, the project addresses the critical issue of zoonotic diseases in tribal areas through a One Health approach. The launch event featured inaugural remarks, expert sessions, and collaborative discussions involving leading researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals. Keynote speakers, including Dr. Rajpal Singh Kashyap (CIIMS), Dr. Ashish Satav (MAHAN), and Dr. Aparup Das (ICMR-NIRTH), emphasized the project’s multidisciplinary strategy—encompassing epidemiological surveillance, molecular diagnostics, AI integration, and community engagement. Technical sessions showcased advancements like AI-powered diagnostics (SigTuple), Lateral Flow Tests for Brucellosis (Caregenix), and drone-enabled healthcare logistics (i-Drone by ICMR). Experts from diverse fields including veterinary science, neurology, public health, pathology, psychology, and pharmacology shared insights on zoonotic disease diagnosis, prevention, and management. Emphasis was placed on data analytics, neuro-pathological impacts, de-addiction integration, mental health, and the use of image processing for surveillance. MAHAN Trust’s impactful community health models and infrastructure in Melghat were highlighted, demonstrating successful interventions in malnutrition, maternal-child health, and mortality reduction. The project aims to enhance tribal healthcare through robust diagnostics, policy advocacy, and local capacity building. In conclusion, the event underlined the project’s significance in safeguarding tribal health from zoonotic threats, promoting collaborative research, and setting the groundwork for impactful public health policies tailored to India’s underserved tribal populations.
